    Geetha Kumarasinghe vacates Parliamentary post

    Geetha.KumarasingheGeneral Secretary of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake has informed the Elections Commission that the Parliamentary seat of Geetha Kumarasinghe has been vacated.

    Deputy General Secretary of Parliament Neil Iddawela informed NewsRadio that the notice was issued in writing to the Elections Commission.

    The Court of Appeal last Wednesday ruled that United People’s Freedom Alliance Galle District MP Geetha Kumarasinghe cannot hold a Parliamentary post as she holds dual citizenship and was against the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

    The verdict was read out in Court by Judge Preethi Padman Surasena following the approval of the Chairman of the Court of Appeal Vijith Malalgoda.

    Geetha Kumarasinghe is also a citizen of Switzerland. Accordingly the next candidate on the UPFA list for the Galle District Piyasena Gamage, who has the next highest number of preferential votes in the 2015 General Election held on the 17th of August will take oath as a Parliamentarian.
