Sri Lanka eyes 20% jump in travellers from India in FY19

Sri Lanka is looking at a near 20 per cent rise in travellers from India during FY19.

Apart from tourists and business travellers, the country is presenting itself as a MICE (meeting, incentives, conventions and entertainment) destination.

In 2017, 2.5 crore people from India travelled from India were to the tune of , in 2017.

According to Kumar De Silva, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, India accounted for 300,000 or almost 15 per cent of the international travellers who visited Sri Lanka last fiscal (FY18). India accounts for the largest number of foreign tourists to the island nation.

“In the first few months of this year, we are already witnessing 18-19 per cent growth in travellers from India. We hope to maintain this momentum,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an interactive session organised by the MCCI.

Right now tourism is the third highest foreign revenue earner for the island nation. Remittances and apparel exports are the two other major revenue generators.

Apart from Mumbai and Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru are the major contributors from India.

According to Lalit Peris, Country Manager, Sri Lankan, the carrier sees a major “potential” from the east. It has three direct flights to Colombo from Kolkata every week and will add one more to cater to the demand during the upcoming Puja season.
