Sri Lanka Meagapolis Authority Act to parliament in two months

The legal act for Sri Lanka government’s hallmark Megapolis development is now drafted and will be presented in parliament soon, a senior official said.

“We hope to bring the Megapolis Act to the legislature in the next two months,” Ranjith Fernando, chairman of the Urban Development Authority said.

“This act will designate the Western region including Colombo into a separate Authority which will separate it from the UDA which will handle the rest of the country.”

The new Authority will be set up under the purview of the newly established Ministry of Megapolis and Western Province Development and would prepare plans for the development of the Western Province.

For instance, in the Western Province the Authority would be responsible for resolving the housing issue of shanty dwellers and drawing traffic plans to avoid congestion in busy towns. New cities would be developed in the Bandaragama, Kadawatha, Kottawa and Kerawalapitiya areas surrounding the outer circular road now under construction.

The Authority would identify low lying and environmentally sensitive areas for water retention, forest conservation, paddy fields, agriculture, industries, commercial activities, residences, tourism and fisheries.
