Sri Lanka plans hi-tech search for ground water amid drought

Sri Lanka plans to acquire modern technology to search for ground water and new drilling equipment, amid the worst drought in 40 years, the government has said.

Sri Lanka’s Water Resources Board had been given the go ahead by the cabinet of minister to obtain modern geo-hydro survey tools to search for water in drought hit areas in Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Moneragala and Hambantota.

Water Resources Management Minister Wijith Wijayamuni Zoysa had told the cabinet that equipment with the agency was more than 20 years old.

Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Ministry and other agencies are trucking drinking water to drought hit areas.

With poor rainfall in 2016 and erratic rainfall with floods in some areas, Sri Lanka’s key agricultural areas are suffering.
