Three Sri Lankans held for smuggling 1.7 kg gold

Three Sri Lankan nationals, who arrived from Colombo, were arrested on Saturday night by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) for allegedly trying to smuggle gold.

The CISF sleuths seized close to 1.7 kg of gold from the suspects, who were identified as Mohammed Iftikhar Fahmeeda, 48, Ayub Fatima Roshana,43, and Nagoor Adumai Fatima 45.

The trio landed in Bangalore at around 2.50 am and soon after, one of the suspects tried to remove something from her shoe and keep it in her hand baggage.

Upon noticing this, the Central Industrial Security Force sleuths grew suspicious, closely followed them and took them into custody. The suspects were then sent for customs clearance and after a thorough search, gold ornaments and bullion were seized from them, police said.

The CISF men then alerted their Chennai counterparts to beef up security.

Following the incident, security measures have been intensified at the Kempegowda International Airport and Chennai airports to ensure foolproof surveillance, added police.

This is the second such incident that has occurred in less than a month.
