USD 60 million loan from ADB for clean drinking water

The Sri Lankan government has obtained a loan of USD 60 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to provide safe drinking water for chronic kidney disease (CKD) prone areas, a statement by the Finance Ministry said on Wednesday.

The project will be set up in the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Matale, Badulla, Monaragala, Puttalam and Kurunegala.

In addition, the project will contribute to improving priority infrastructure and basic services delivery in 29 local areas in the Western, Southern, Central, North Western and Uva Provinces.

The ADB has previously provided USD 59 million for projects ending December 2016.

Each year, hundreds of people die from CKD in Sri Lanka, especially from the island’s north central dry zone agricultural region.
